We ran this program for Koori youth from La Perouse, who lived next to the Sailing Club, but few had ever been able to access the world of Sailing. We also ran the progam for youth from the Western Suburbs of Sydney, many of whom had little previous access to the water.
Project Summary
Our Sailing program aims to use the positive and enjoyable hands-on fun experience of Sailing as a means of engaging Indigenous Youth and Youth at Risk in learning all aspects of Sailing.
Once the Program is completed, students will have the option of mentoring students in future programs. Skill development will include students building good working relationships with the instructor and fellow students. They will also have the opportunity of accessing the wider world of Sailing by joining a Sailing Club during the Program.
Succeed, Aspire, Inspire, Listen (SAIL) • To Identify and teach Indigenous Youth and Youth at Risk the skills needed to safely operate and sail a sailing boat.
• To provide each person with the opportunity for sailing skills advancement after the program has finished
• To learn respect for the Instructor, each other, themselves and the Environment.
• To teach cooperation, listening skills, pleasure in learning and the joy of sailing a boat.
This project will show young people that Sailing can be a very exciting and fun sport where you can meet and socialize with your friends while experiencing the joys of sailing.
