A surfing program for Indigenous youth and youth at risk

Green Room Grommet© uses the hands-on fun experience of surfing as a means of engaging Indigenous Youth and Youth at Risk in learning about all aspects of surfing. Once the Program is completed, students will have the option of mentoring students in future classes.

Skill development will include students building good working relationships with the instructor and fellow students. They will also have the opportunity of accessing the wider world of surfing by forming or joining a Board riding club during the Program.

In the process young people will develop the skills needed to:
1. Competently understand the ocean and the dangers surrounding it.
2. Work individually and in small groups
3. Listen to and understand instructions
4. Be organized and on time
5. Accept responsibility for the security of equipment
6. Enjoy learning

The value of this project
This project will show young people that surfing can be a very relaxing and fun sport where you can meet and socialize with your friends while experiencing the joy and thrills of riding waves. After the project is completed the young people will turn to the older people in the community to support opportunities to compete in organized surfing events.

Format of the program

We align with organisations that offer an accredited surfing program. This can be in the form of a 3 or 4 day program format.
